Anheuser Busch celebrates Idaho barley

Alice Elison / for Farm & Ranch
This germination tank at Anheuser Busch's Idaho Falls plant is where the barley that is sprouted goes to have the amylase enzyme work its magic by breaking down the starch into the simple sugar maltose. One batch of malted barley produces six billion, 12-ounce bottles of beer.

Eastern Idaho barley is not just livestock feed, it’s a key component in a popular brand of beverage. Anheuser Busch’s annual Grower Days celebration, held July 13, saluted farmers who grow their special varieties of malt barley.
