Are we doing enough to protect farmworkers?

Javier Tellez Juarez’ wife, Norma, feeds him in this December 1996 photo. He lost his limbs when his shirt was caught in machinery while he dug a post hole. An artificial arm allowed him to write, paint and eat a little bit, but his wife took over feeding him most of the time. His case prompted a change in Idaho law to require that farmers to carry worker’s compensation insurance for their laborers. Katherine Jones / Idaho Statesman
