INL hires top Idaho State administrator

Grimes

A top Idaho State University administrator will join Idaho National Laboratory’s growing Center for Advanced Energy Studies in Idaho Falls.

Howard Grimes, vice president for research and economic development at ISU, will serve as director for innovation in industry partnerships at CAES and Energy and Environmental Science and Technology Directorate (EEST). He starts Feb. 23.

“I will be working with the Idaho National Laboratory and the Center for Advanced Energy Studies to develop innovative approaches for integrating the public and private sector into partnerships that change the energy landscape for our future,” Grimes said in an ISU news release.

CAES director Steven Aumeier said Grimes’ job would be focused on finding “more innovative ways to connect private sector needs with Idaho National Laboratory and public research and to help U.S. companies be more competitive in rapidly changing fields.”

Grimes joined ISU in late 2012. He previously worked in several leadership roles at Washington State University.

CAES has a close research partnership with ISU, along with three other regional universities — University of Idaho, Boise State University and University of Wyoming. Wyoming was added to the consortium last year.

ISU President Arthur Vailas said Grimes’ addition would help foster “continued collaboration” between the university and INL.
