Man reportedly threatened to drop child from balcony

Idaho Falls Police officers on Tuesday arrested an intoxicated man after he reportedly dangled his 7-year-old daughter from an eighth-floor balcony.

Christopher J. Miller, 38, of Plymouth, Ind., was booked into the Bonneville County Jail on a felony charge of injury to a child, according to a Police Department news release. Miller has a preliminary hearing scheduled Jan. 13.

The girl’s mother told police she and Miller got into an argument about his visitation with their children, the release said. The woman left a hotel room to go to her car. From outside the woman heard her daughter screaming and looked up to see Miller reportedly dangling the child over the balcony railing from the top floor of Hotel on the Falls.

Police Department spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said the girl was able to get away from Miller and ran barefoot outside to her mother. The woman called police who responded at about 10 p.m.

The woman told police Miller had threatened to drop the girl from the balcony. Hansen said there were two other children in the hotel room under the age of 3. Miller did not threaten the other children, Hansen said.

Hansen said when officers interviewed Miller he showed signs of intoxication and was barely able to stand up. Later at the jail, Hansen said Miller became “extremely volatile,” and was placed in a single holding cell where he beat and kicked at the door.

Injury to a child is punishable by no less than one year in prison with a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison.
