The Idaho Falls City Council on Thursday unanimously agreed to allow purchases of wine and beer from retail stores Thanksgiving Day.
Previously, city ordinances only permitted the sale of wine or beer by the glass for consumption on premises during the holiday.
Council members described the move as necessary to put city regulations in line with state and other local laws.
“The retailers came in and alerted us to this,” Council President Michael Lehto. “The surrounding communities are already doing this, but Idaho Falls prohibited it.”
The City Council also unanimously agreed to suspend the normal rules requiring three readings of the ordinance before enacting it.
“I kind of look at that as a housekeeping issue,” Lehto said. “This just cleans it up for the retailers, makes it a little less confusing.”
