An Idaho Falls man turned himself in to police Wednesday for allegedly knocking his girlfriend down and choking her.
Skyler Standley, 19, was booked into Bonneville County Jail and charged with attempted strangulation.
Idaho Falls police spokeswoman Joelyn Hansen said the incident occurred at 4:30 a.m. May 29 at Snake River Landing. The 20-year-old victim reported the incident to police May 31, Hansen said.
Standley and the victim were walking along the Snake River when he accused her of stealing money, Hansen said. Standley reportedly became physically aggressive and the victim decided to leave.
When the victim went to Standley’s car to retrieve her belongings, Hansen said Standley grabbed her by her throat. The
victim then tried to run away, but Standley reportedly knocked her to the ground and grabbed her throat again.
Police refused to release the victim’s name Thursday on the advice of the Idaho Falls city attorney’s office.
Standley was released to a pretrial release program Thursday, meaning he will await court proceedings while under strict supervision.
If he violates the restrictions of the program, he will await court proceedings in jail.
Attempted strangulation is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
