Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies Monday were unable to find an Idaho Falls rafter who went missing Sunday on the South Fork of the Snake River.
Jefferson County Sheriff Blair Olsen said Mason Empey, 21, was last seen after he and Torrey Reinhart, 20, of Idaho Falls hit some rocks and debris around 3 p.m. roughly 1.5 miles upstream of the Lorenzo boat ramp, which is off U.S. Highway 20 near Bear World.
Olsen said Empey jumped off the 12-foot raft after they lost an oar.
Reinhart was able to guide the raft to shore and get help, Olsen said, but Empey was nowhere to be seen.
“It’s believed that due to the cold water and swift current he wasn’t able to swim to shore,” Olsen said.
Olsen said neither Empey nor Reinhart were wearing life jackets.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies, Bonneville County Sheriff’s deputies and Madison County Sheriff’s deputies continued to search for Empey on Monday.
