I.F. man searched for child porn, guns online

Mobley

An Idaho Falls man was caught with more than 100 images of child pornography on his computer after he hired a technician to repair it.

Matthew Harvey Mobley, 44, was arrested Sept. 8 after the repairman reported to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office that he had found images of what appeared to be child pornography on an Acer Aspire V5 laptop. The repairman turned the computer and two other devices over to the sheriff’s office, an iPod Touch and an iPad, according to an investigation report by Detective Barrett Hillier with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

After obtaining a search warrant for the devices, Hillier found a folder on the laptop with images of child pornography. Hillier also found files under the username “Matthew Mobley” that included more images of child pornography. Hillier said in his report he found 158 images of child pornography.

Mobley told Hillier he had never downloaded pictures, pornographic or otherwise, onto the laptop. He said he had only recently purchased the laptop used and the images must have been left by the previous owner.

Hillier found a red Nextbook tablet and several mini SD cards. The history on the tablet’s browser showed it had been used to visit several child pornography sites over the week prior to Mobley’s arrest. The search history also revealed the tablet had been used to search Craigslist and some pawn shop sites, specifically for AR-15 rifles for sale.

The pictures depicted girls between the ages of 8 and 13. Videos of children as young as 4 performing sex acts were also found on the laptop. Videos also were found of Mobley using illegal drugs, Hillier’s report said.

A felony arrest warrant was issued on Sept. 8. Mobley was found at a rest stop on Interstate 15 after Hillier saw the white Nissan X-Terra that Mobley had been using. Bingham County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest.

Chief Deputy Jeff Gardner of the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office found unidentified drugs in Mobley’s car. Investigators also found methamphetamine. The unidentified drugs were sent to a lab for testing.

Gardner said the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office is in the process of filing charges against Mobley for drug possession. Drug paraphernalia was also found, including a glass meth pipe, needles and a bong.

Mobley is being held in the Bonneville County Jail on a $150,000 bond. He is facing five counts of possessing or accessing sexually exploitative material, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.
