Car theft suspect barricades himself in home

The Rexburg Police Department arrested a man suspected of stealing several cars and car keys from a Rexburg car dealership last week.

Robert James Mathews, 28, was arrested Wednesday at a home he was renting on Webster Avenue. Police suspect he broke into Smart Cents Auto Sales, stealing all the dealership’s keys and three cars. The cars were found the next morning, but only some of the keys were found scattered around.

Mathews barricaded himself in the home when approached by police and refused to come out. Police negotiated with Mathews and he eventually exited the house and turned himself in.

According to Rexburg Police Captain Randy Lewis, several items linking Mathews to the break in were found in the house, including some of the car keys and clothing similar to that seen in security footage of the break in. Lewis said some of the keys are still missing.

The Madison County Prosecutor’s office is reviewing the case to determine what charges should be filed.
