Pharmacist given probation for drug distribution

A St. Anthony pharmacist was sentenced Tuesday in federal court for providing a controlled substance to a police informant without a prescription.

Paul Allen was charged in January for three counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill sentenced Allen to one year of probation for one charge and dismissed the other two as part of a plea agreement.

The plea agreement also requires Allen to give up his DEA registration number. Allen sold the pharmacy to Huntco Inc. and said he will continue to work as a staff pharmacist.

According to the indictment, Allen distributed Tramadol in March and April 2016 to a customer who was working as an informant. The plea agreement states Allen was aware the customer did not have a prescription when he gave her the Tramadol.

Allen was also fined $1,000, and will have to pay 10 percent of his gross income each month during probation.
