WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. — Just past a campground and a collection of summer homes on the southern side of Hebgen Lake, there’s a gap in the trees. In front of a thick wall of trees, the spot is barren, hosting only a massive pile of stumps, limbs and branches. A few widely spaced lodgepole pine trees reach for the sky, swaying with the breeze.

Walking along the side of the road, tail wagging, as his tongue lolls, Kiba’s usually white fur is a patchwork of red, white and blue. The colors match the tinsel braided into the manes and tails of the horses trotting down the road that’s usually filled with cars.
