Support staff size gives Power Five teams big edge

FILE - In this Jan. 9, 2017, file photo, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian is seen on the sidelines during the second half of the NCAA college football playoff championship game against Clemson, in Tampa, Fla. When Alabama switched offensive coordinators during last season’s playoff, it had an in-house solution. The Crimson Tide’s support staff included former Washington and Southern California head coach Steve Sarkisian, who took over the offense for the championship game. Western Kentucky didn’t have that luxury this season when offensive line coach Geoff Dart was diagnosed with brain tumors and underwent surgery to limit his availability. The Hilltoppers had to rely on tight ends coach Mike Mahaffey and graduate assistant Mike Bivin to pick up the slack. Those two examples underscore the difference in staff sizes between Power Five programs and Group of Five schools.(AP Photo/David J. Phillip, File)
