IF Shootout hits town on Friday

Sixty teams from Idaho, Montana, Utah and Wyoming will hit Idaho Falls for this weekend’s annual Idaho Falls Shootout soccer tournament, which will take over fields at the Soccer Complex and Sunnyside Park.

The tournament, entering its 35th year, will feature boys competition from U11 to U18, and girls divisions from U12 to U16.

It will also serve as a memorial for Bonneville Youth Soccer League president Dean Cook, who died in March. Cook was the driving force behind the growth of soccer in eastern Idaho, and IF Shootout tournament director Jamie Prestwich said his loss has been tough to overcome.

“We’re all kind of scrambling to fill those shoes, which will never be accomplished,” said Prestwich, who is running the tournament for the fourth straight year. “I know I miss him a lot.”

Many of the teams Cook coached in the past will wear patches on their uniforms with the initials “DIFD,” which stands for Do It For Dean.

Prestwich said BYSL also made up a banner featuring Cook’s photo and his favorite saying, “It’s all about the kids.” The banner will be stationed near the tournament headquarters near fields 1 and 2 at the Soccer Complex, and people can sign the banner throughout the tournament.

Tournament action begins with U14 boys games Friday at the Complex, and ends with the U12 boys championship game at 2 p.m. Sunday at Sunnyside.
