HS Roundup: Skyline’s Ames III receives national honor

Skyline High School senior running back David Ames III received a national honor on Tuesday.

Ames III, the 2016 Post Register All-Area Football Player of the Year and a Weber State football signee, was named the 2017 All-American Athlete of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association, an international nonprofit professional association based in Colorado Springs. Ames III was nominated by Skyline coach Justin Jicha for his “dedication to improve in athletics while maintaining academic prominence.” The complete list of 2017 winners has not yet been released, but 295 college athletes and 117 high school athletes were recognized as All-American Athletes of the Year in 2016.

Softball

HIGHLAND 11, BONNEVILLE 0 (6 INNINGS); HIGHLAND 7, BONNEVILLE 0: At Iona, Highland pitcher Kiara Grover held the Bees in check as Bonneville was swept in a 5A District 5-6 doubleheader.

Grover totaled 30 strikeouts on the day, throwing a one-hit shutout in the 11-0 opening win in six innings and a two-hit shutout in the 7-0 win in the second game of the twin bill.

“She’s pretty tough, to say the least,” Bonneville coach Dennie Edwards said. “We gave them a few two many extra outs.”

North Idaho College signee Ashlyn Winn led Highland (13-2, 4-0) in game one, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and falling a home run short of the cycle while Keana Harmon went 3 for 5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in game two.

Ashley Hathaway went 1 for 2 for Bonneville’s lone hit in game one while Olivia Lemons went 1 for 3 and Linda Scoresby went 1 for 3 in game two.

Skyline outhit Pocatello 12-5 en route to a 14-3, five-inning win in game one and were held to three hits in an 11-1 loss in six innings in game two, which featured a grand slam by Pocatello’s Hailey Morrison.

Skyline got home runs from Charity Clark (2 for 3, one double, one RBI) and Erin Conner (2 for 2, two RBIs, three runs scored) in game one while Kyla Johnson went 1 for 2 with a double in game two.

WEST JEFFERSON 9, NORTH FREMONT 7: At Terreton, a four-run fifth inning provided the difference for West Jefferson in its Nuclear Conference opening win over North Fremont.

The Panthers entered that frame with the game knotted at 5-5 and set the tone with a home run by Amber Brown.

“She was our first batter,” West Jefferson coach Raquel Torgerson said. “She got the wheels going. We were able to play defense through the seventh inning.”

The Huskies scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but came no closer.

Brown went 2 for 4 with a double, home run and two RBIs, Taylor Holdaway went 3 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI and Mattie Wood went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for West Jefferson (2-8, 1-0), which travels to the Malad Tournament on Friday.

Madison claimed the game one win, ending a pitcher’s duel with a walkoff RBI single by Spencer Evans in the bottom of the ninth. The teams’ pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts and three walks. Evans went 1 for 2 with an RBI while Jaxson Hodges and Cyson Orr each went 1 for 4 for Madison. Jake Hawkes went 3 for 4 to lead Hillcrest.

Hillcrest turned a 2-0 deficit into an 8-2 game two win, taking the lead with a four-run fourth inning. Tyson Kress went 2 for 4 with an RBI and Michael Patterson went 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored for Hillcrest while Devan Berry went 2 for 3 with a double and Hodges went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored for Madison.
