HS Roundup: Madison girls defend district title

At Rexburg, the Madison High School girls soccer team repeated as 5A District 5-6 champions with a 2-0 win over Highland—the same team the Bobcats faced for last year’s district championship—to clinch its spot in the 5A state soccer tournament.

Syd Thueson scored the Bobcats’ first goal on a free kick in the second half. Annalise Brunson added the second goal on a penalty kick.

The Bobcats (14-1-1) will begin the 5A state tournament Oct. 19 against the No. 3 seed out of District 3 at Rocky Mountain High School.

BONNEVILLE 3, HILLCREST 1: At Thunder Stadium, a pair of first half goals and a key save of a penalty kick in the second half were enough to propel the Bonneville High School girls soccer team into Saturday’s 5A District 5-6 winner-to-state game after defeating Hillcrest on Wednesday.

“I was absolutely happy with what I saw today,” Bees coach Amy Feik said. “There is room for improvement for sure, but we are happy to get to play one more game.”

Jackie Mendez scored the Bees first goal in the fifth minute. Holli Virgil scored the second just prior to halftime.

With the Knights trailing 2-1 midway through the second half, Bees goalie Kylee Landon made a save on a Knights penalty kick to keep the Bees one goal advantage.

“That save was huge,” Feik said. “Our senior goalie game up huge for us.”

Kennedy Hart added the Bees final goal in the 75th minute. Olivia McMurphy scored Hillcrest’s lone goal.

Bonneville (7-9-2) will take on Highland (10-4-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pocatello with the winner advancing to the 5A state tournament. Hillcrest finishes the season 5-11-1.
