At Firth High School, Butte County clinched the 1A Division II District 5-6 volleyball title with a 3-1 win over Watersprings.
The Pirates took set one 25-23, lost set two 25-19 before taking the final two sets 25-10 and 25-22.
“It’s unfortunate we didn’t get it done,” Watersprings coach Robyn King said.
Watersprings had to turn around to take on Rockland in the second-place game. The Warriors won the match in straight sets 25-16, 25-14, 25-15 to clinch the district’s second seed to state.
Butte County will take on Logos in the opening match of the 1A DII state volleyball tournament one week from today while Watersprings will take on the top seed from District 1. The tournament will take place at Lewiston High School.
2A District 6 volleyball
FIRTH 3, WEST JEFFERSON 0; NORTH FREMONT 3, RIRIE 0; WEST JEFFERSON 3, SALMON 1; SALMON 3, NORTH FREMONT 2: At Salmon High School, top seeded Firth swept West Jefferson 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 to clinch a berth in the Nuclear Conference championship game on Saturday.
“We just played our game,” Cougars coach Elda Park said. “We played well in the first two sets and in that third set West Jefferson started to find some holes. But we moved out block and got things figured out.”
Hailey Gee led the Cougars with nine kills. Cammie Gee added 20 assists, 17 digs and two blocks.
Firth will take on the winner of Saturday’s West Jefferson/Salmon match for the district championship at 3 p.m. at Salmon High School.
It was a full night of volleyball at Salmon High School.
North Fremont took down Ririe in the straight sets 25-10, 25-19, 25-23 to start the evening.
In match two West Jefferson defeated Salmon 3-1. The Panthers won the first set 25-21 before falling 25-17 in set two. West Jefferson closed out the match with 25-13 and 25-22 wins.
The Savages played again right after the conclusion of their match with the Panthers. And it was a five set thriller.
After losing the first two sets to North Fremont 25-11 and 25-22, the Savages won the next three 25-15, 25-18 and 18-16. Salmon trailed 12-9 before rallying to earn the win.
West Jefferson and Salmon will play for the right to play Firth at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Salmon High School. The district championship match will follow immediately after.
4ADistrict 5-6 volleyball
At Century High School, top-seeded Century returned to the top of 4A District 5-6 with a 25-11, 25-22, 29-27 win over Preston in the district championship match.
Fifth seeded Preston will be the district’s second seed. Preston eliminated defending district champion Idaho Falls 3-0 earlier in the day. This is the first time Idaho Falls has failed to qualify for the state tournament since 1998. Their 18-year postseason streak was the longest such streak for a District 6 5A school in any sport.
TETON 56, SOUTH FREMONT 26: At St. Anthony, Teton earned a big 56-26 win over South Fremont Thursday night. The victory gives the Redskins a chance to claim the at-large berth in the 3A football playoffs. No other details were available as of press time.
Teton finishes the regular season 3-6 and 1-3 in the Mountain Rivers Conference. South Fremont finishes the season (4-5, 0-3).
