At Dona Larsen Park in Boise, Rigby High School’s Braden Youngstrom scored four of the Trojans’ five touchdowns in Thursday’s 35-21 win over Borah in the opening round of the 5A state playoffs.
The senior running back finished the evening with 190 yards on 18 carries and 105 yards on three catches. Three of his four touchdowns were on the ground. This was the fifth game this season Youngstrom has had at least three touchdowns.
Youngstrom’s first touchdown put Rigby up 7-0 in the first quarter before Borah responded with 21 consecutive points from Jay Ahlstrom, Ellis Magnuson and Ilaisa Makaafi. A 7-yard run by Rigby’s Braden Erickson made it a one-touchdown game to end the first quarter. The Trojans then scored 21 unanswered points over the next two quarters off three Youngstrom touchdowns.
While Borah had Rigby beat with 262 passing yards to 200 and 21 first downs to 14, penalties took more of a toll on the Lions. Rigby was penalized eight times for 60 yards while Borah was penalized nine times for 88 yards, including one in the last minute and a half of the game.
Tanner Clayton had a solid night, completing 10 of 18 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown. Robbie Larsen rushed for 11 yards on one carry, Erickson rushed for seven yards on one carry for a touchdown and Mason Priest caught two passes for 40 yards for Rigby (8-2), which faces defending state champion Mountain View in next week’s quarterfinals at a to-be-determined time and place.
