HS Roundup: Grizz boys make 13 3s in season opening win

At Bonneville High School, the Skyline High School boys basketball team began the 2017-18 season with a 23-point first quarter en route to a 64-55 nonconference win over Bonneville.

The Grizz made 13 3-pointers in the game, including five in the first quarter.

“They were on fire for having only practiced a week,” Bonneville coach John Tucker said. “They were playing football last Saturday.”

Cruz Taylor scored a game-high 20 points, Jaden Landes added 14 and Danny Webb had 11 for Skyline (1-0), which hosts Rigby on Wednesday.

Randon Hostert had 18 points, Jamison Trane had nine and Gerhom Rihari added eight for Bonneville (0-1), which hosts Blackfoot on Wednesday.

HILLCREST 57, BLACKFOOT 32: At Ammon, four Hillcrest players finished the evening with double-figure scoring in a season-opening nonconference win over Blackfoot.

The Knights took a 29-13 halftime lead propelled by an 18-point second quarter.

“We ended up creating some turnovers and got some easy shots,” Hillcrest coach Dave Austin. “It just kinda opened the doors for us. Really it was our defense that kinda set the tone for the night.”

Robinson had 10 points for Blackfoot (0-1), which plays Wednesday at Bonneville.

Jaxon Weatherly had 14 points, Derek Marlowe had 13 and Parker Stevens added 10 for Hillcrest (1-0), which hosts Twin Falls on Wednesday.

IDAHO FALLS 37, RIGBY 35: At Idaho Falls High School, Idaho Falls held off a fourth-quarter run by Rigby to begin the season with a nonconference win.

Idaho Falls and Rigby traded leads in the first half, which ended with a 21-16 Tigers lead. Idaho Falls coach Howard Hart said the Tigers built a 10-point lead in the second half before the Trojans cut into it.

“If you liked defense, man, both teams played solid,” Hart said. “Moving from one sport to the next, the flow from the offensive standpoint wasn’t really there for either team. I thought both teams played solid defense, limited shot opportunities and contested shots. This part of the season is good for growth opportunities.”

Tanoa Togiai had eight points and Wyatt Taylor added seven for Rigby (0-1), which plays Wednesday at Skyline.

Kalvin Bowen had a game-high 17 points while Andrew Gregersen added seven for Idaho Falls (1-0), which plays Wednesday at Madison.
