Boys bball, wrestling roundup: Diggers edge Filer

At Sugar City, the Sugar-Salem High School boys basketball team won a low-scoring nonconference contest over Filer 38-33.

Sugar-Salem led 22-11 at halftime before Filer responded by outscoring the Diggers 13-3 in the third quarter to make it a one-point game.

“They’re a much improved team from when we saw them at the first part of the season,” Sugar-Salem coach Shawn Freeman said. “We ended up hitting some free throws down the stretch.”

Dan Shirley and Chandler Pincock had eight points each to lead Sugar-Salem (9-5), which hosts Firth on Tuesday.

FIRTH 58, SOUTH FREMONT 53: At Firth, the Cougars in blue edged the Cougars in red thanks to some late free throws for a nonconference win.

South Fremont led 27-24 at halftime before Firth cut the deficit to 44-42 after three. The game was tied with less than a minute left in regulation.

“We shot some free throws and didn’t make them,” South Fremont coach Ryon Pope said. “We fouled them and they made free throws. Firth’s a very talented team. We haven’t won a lot of games, but my guys are working very hard and still improving.”

Grayson Nelson and Wyatt Jenkins had 17 points each for Firth (4-6), which begins conference play tonight at West Jefferson.

Reece Yancey and Kyler Yancey had 10 points each for South Fremont (3-10), which hosts West Jefferson on Friday.

MACKAY 47, NORTH GEM 43: At Mackay, the Miners held the Cowboys scoreless in the third quarter to earn their second win in four games.

Jakoda Whitworth led all scorers with 23 points, as Dallin and Caleb Green added eight points, respectively, during the win.

“They grinded out the second half and make the right plays at the right time,” Mackay coach Kelvin Krosch said.

It’s the second time Mackay has beaten North Gem this season.

Mackay (9-3) will play tonight at Salmon.

BLACKFOOT LEADS TEAM STANDINGS AT MADISON INVITATIONAL: At Rexburg, the Broncos lead the team standings after the first day of the annual Madison Invitational.

Blackfoot has compiled 99 points through day one while Sugar-Salem is not far behind in second place with 86 points.

Shelley, Skyline, Madison and Idaho Falls are also in the top 10. The Russets are in sixth with 61 points, Skyline is in seventh with 52, Madison is in eighth with 50 and Idaho Falls is in 10th with 45 points—one point ahead of 11th place North Fremont.

Matches resume at 9 a.m. today at Madison High School.
