SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Concerns about air quality have prompted Salt Lake City officials to consider scrapping city-sponsored fireworks displays this summer.
Mayor Ralph Becker’s latest budget proposes cutting the $25,000 used to pay for shows at city parks on July 4 and July 24.
Becker’s spokesman Art Raymond says it’s a small step but it takes many small steps to make a big difference to improve the city’s air.
Several city council members say they understand the mayor’s motivation but wonder how effective the move will be.
Council Chairman Charlie Luke says the Salt Lake Bees regularly shoot off fireworks at their baseball games.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports a public hearing on the budget will be held June 3. The council is expected to make a decision in mid-June.
