Walgreens robbery suspect dies in custody

A suspect in the May 27 armed robbery of Walgreens in Blackfoot committed suicide while in custody on an unrelated charge in Blaine County.

Mitchel Wayne Christensen, 23, of Buhl, jumped over a railing at the jail’s mezzanine level and landed about 13 feet below Friday, Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey said.

Ramsey said Christensen was transported by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Ketchum and then life-flighted to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise, where he died of his injuries about 1 a.m. Saturday.

The Blackfoot/Bingham County Joint Detective Unit announced it has solved the robbery that occurred at Walgreens at 960 W. Bridge St.

Christensen was identified as a suspect in that robbery and also was linked to several robberies across southern Idaho and northern Utah.

The Blackfoot Police Department is seeking identification on additional suspects involved in this case.
