POCATELLO – On the first play from scrimmage, Declo went over the top for a 46-yard completion to the Butte County 8-yard line and it only got worse from there as No. 1-ranked Declo rolled Butte County 43-0 Saturday at Holt Arena.

“They’re really good team,” Butte County coach Sam Thorngren said. “I thought at times we competed really well. It’s just they made the big plays. They always stepped up, and we didn’t.”

Two plays after Logan Knopp’s 46-yard catch, Larsen Webb ran in a 5-yard touchdown and Declo never looked back.

Quarterback Jeremy Jenkins led Declo to a 30-0 halftime lead, completing 14 of 19 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t take a snap after halftime as Declo piled 260 yards of offense in the first half, and 356 in the game.

“We didn’t get enough pressure,” Butte County coach Sam Thorngren said. “We knew going in he was going to be the best quarterback we’d see.”

It could have been worse on defense if Brandon Pearson didn’t pick off both of Declo backup quarterback Ross Sanders’ second-half throws.

Compounding Declo’s vaunted offense was the five turnovers Butte County committed while managing just 174 yards of offense. Even Butte County’s bright spot Saturday, freshman running back Tyler Andreason, who carried 20 times for 127 yards, fumbled twice.

“You’re never going to win a game turning it over five times,” Thorngren said.

While Butte County finishes the season 3-5, it has plenty to look forward to next season as it has voted to stay up in the 2A classification. Four freshmen and four sophomores started for Butte County on Saturday.

“We’ll be a threat to do a whole lot more next year,” Thorngren said.
