Senior volleyball stars bid farewell
By zkyle • Nov 5th, 2009 • Category: News, VolleyballFun was the order of business at the District 6 Senior Volleyball All-Star game Wednesday at Bonneville High School. Players from rival schools took the court together on the same side of the net, making matches more cordial than competitive.
In an exhibition with nothing at stake, the moment of the evening came when Hillcrest outside hitter Kelcie Fitch was awarded the 2009 Sixth District Officials Association Scholarship.
By the end of the school year, Fitch will be a four-time letterwinner in volleyball and softball as well as a three time letterwinner in basketball. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while playing sports and working at Target and the Cold Stone Creamery.
Fitch works 55 hours a week in the summer and as much as her sports schedule allows during the school year. She credited her twin brother, Justin, with helping her keep up her grades. Justin also carries a 4.0.
“At lunch you’ll see us studying, or between classes, or before school,” Kelcie Fitch said. I just squeeze homework in between everything else.”
Hillcrest coach Dean Goodworth sang Kelcie Fitch’s praises despite the fact that volleyball occasionally took a back seat to the rigors of her schedule.
“Kelcie just works really, really hard,” Goodworth said. “She works several jobs, she carries a 4.0. She missed a tournament to take an ACT. I hate when these folks do all this good stuff.”
The East All-Star team swept its three matches under Bonneville coach Chantal McMurtrey. Idaho Falls Meghan Hess won the M.P.H. Kill Competition with a speed of 49 m.p.h. Bonneville’s Susan Lindley outlasted teammate Kylee Searle to win the Jump Serving Contest.
