Sex offender arrested for child porn

An Idaho Falls man was arrested after his probation officer discovered child pornography on a hidden cellphone.

John Steven Castillo, 33, was imprisoned for rape in 2005. Castillo was meeting with his parole officer on Nov. 9 when the officer discovered he had a second cellphone. Upon initial examination, the officer found images of child pornography.

Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Detective Barrett Hillier examined the phone Nov. 13, finding more than 2,200 sexually explicit images and videos on the phone, and more than 1,500 depicted prepubescent children involved in sex acts.

Hillier found Castillo used several password protected apps to view the images. Castillo gave Hillier the passwords to access the content. Some of the images were filed into folders titled “Babies-toddlers,” “Boys,” “Girls,” “Men with Boys,” among others.

Castillo told investigators he had downloaded the images over the last two months, and that he had slid into old habits because of stress. The images were obtained from links in chat rooms he found through an app.

Castillo has been charged with five counts of child sexual exploitation by willfully possessing or accessing sexually exploitative material. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Dec. 15.
