Nation of idiots

Received Dec. 28

As Carolyn Abbott commented, I too have thought about the "perks" our elected officials receive. I wonder how we allowed our elected officials to remove themselves from the general taxes, retirements, medical, etc. that the general populace has to comply with. Why should they worry about how solvent Social Security and Medicare programs are or the affect reductions in such programs have on the citizens. They have very nicely set up their own separate retirement and medical programs that we as taxpayers so willingly allowed them to enact. They can play with the futures of American citizens because they have protected themselves from any worries.

I feel our nationally elected officials are not worried about the United States of America. The nationally elected officials are more motivated to ensure their re-elections and filling their bank accounts. Twenty-one of 22 incumbent senators were re-elected and 353 of 373 incumbent members of the House were re-elected. The American people have re-elected 94 percent of the incumbents who were running for re-election in a body that has an approval rating of about 9 percent. This indicates, as an electorate, we are a nation of idiots. We're now stuck with the useless, dysfunctional government that we deserve. (Word count: 203)
