Still relevant

Received Nov. 30

Dear Mr. Donald MacDonald,

History has shown that we need the right to keep and bear arms individually and as a state to protect life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Before and during the American Revolution, King George, with the aid of his soldiers, confiscated guns to prevent the general population from opposing an imposing government. The founding fathers remembered this and added the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. By slowly dismantling our Constitution with half-truths, we leave ourselves more vulnerable to threats both foreign and domestic. By blaming guns for our social ills, we miss the mark.

Change the minds of the people who want to harm us and we will give up our weapons voluntarily. How are we safer from those who choose to use guns against us by getting rid of our own guns? How does that make and keep us a "Free State?" Millions died in Russia and China because of overbearing governments and unarmed masses. Jews were herded like cattle to their deaths because they were unarmed. A man shot up a theater in Colorado because he lost his sense of humanity and chose to use a gun. Do not be fooled into thinking that the Second Amendment is no longer relevant or that guns are more of a nuisance than a tool. When history is ignored, it's doomed to be repeated. Let America be a "Free State" now and forever. Leave the guns alone. (Word count: 242)
