Oktoberfest scheduled in Idaho Falls
By CODY McDEVITT
Lovers of beer and German culture have an opportunity to enjoy an authentic Oktoberfest celebration today.
The Knights of Columbus, Idaho Falls Council 1663, will host the event from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. in a field adjoining Christ the King Catholic Church at the corner of Woodruff and 17th Street. Billed as an authentic recreation of Oktoberfest, all of the events will be held under tents.
"We have an authentic German band. There's, of course, lots of different kinds of beer. There will be German cooking from BJ's Bayou," Grand Knight George Mesina said.
The celebration also will feature German and American food. Those attending will have an opportunity to play games such as Hammerschlagen, which involves driving a nail into a tree stump.
Admission is $5 for those 12 and older and $2 for children 6 to 11. Children under 6 get in free.
"We are raising money for charity. We're supporting ... Special Olympics and (also) the Coats for Kids Foundation. Around Christmastime, we will give a lot of coats to needy children," Mesina said.
