Bees top Poky on late FG
By Michael Lycklama
POCATELLO -- Pocatello High School football coach Tom Harrison tried to ice Bonneville's Jordan Vielma twice. But the Bonneville senior would have none of it.
Vielma banged home a 26-yard field goal as time expired to give his team a 32-29 4A District 5-6 win late Thursday night at Holt Arena.
With Bonneville riding a three-game losing streak and fighting for its playoff life, the Bees caught a pair of breaks Thursday.
The first came when Pocatello lined up for a 27-yard field goal with 4:55 left in the fourth quarter to break a 29-29 tie. Bonneville coach Fred Armstrong called his first timeout of the half to ice Pocatello kicker Abby Jones.
The strategy paid off as Jones, a member of the Pocatello girls soccer team who was crowned homecoming queen at halftime, missed the go-ahead field goal attempt short and wide left.
Bonneville's Chance Reese jumped on a loose ball following a muffed punt by Pocatello.
A 15-yard out route to Tyson Craig and a 4-yard run from Vielma to the Pocatello 9-yard line set up Vielma for the game-winning kick.
