Sugar-Salem wrestles way to 3A District 6 team title


The Sugar-Salem High School wrestling team crowned five individual champions and had four more runners-up on its way to winning the 3A District 5-6 tournament Tuesday at South Fremont High School.

Braxton Stocking beat teammate Seth Price to win the 113-pound title, setting the stage for the Diggers.

Sugar-Salem also got individual championships from Raul Nevarez at 126 pounds, Hayden Wood at 132, Bridger Hansen at 160 and Tristan Terry at 195.

Placing second for the Diggers were Justin Orr at 170 pounds, Braden Hansen at 182 and Kenneth Powell at 220.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class automatically qualified for next week's state championships at the Idaho Center in Nampa. In all, the Diggers qualified 15 wrestlers for state.

Teton took second in the team standings with 283 points and automatically qualified 14 wrestlers for state. Tanner Klingler (98 pounds), Ben Hale (106), Cade Cooke (120), Tristan Hansen (145) and Brock Beard (182) won individual titles, while Austin Wilhite (106), Garrett Beard (126), Kody Hill (138), Jesse Murdock (152) and Thomas Bates (160) each finished second.

South Fremont was third with 195 points and three individual champs -- Jeret Angell at 170, Eli Lagerstrom at 220 and Matthew Parke at 285. The Cougars automatically qualified nine wrestlers for state.

Shelley placed fourth with 112.5 points and two champions, Takoda Bingham at 138 and Josh Calderwood at 152. The Russets automatically qualified six wrestlers for state.
