Layne Armstrong of Ashton died after crashing a snowmobile Saturday around 7:40 p.m.

Armstrong, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene after hitting a fence post at the trailhead at the intersection of Walnut Street and Baker Lane in Ashton, Fremont County Sheriff's Office dispatch operator Megan Swensen said.

Armstrong worked as a lineman at Falls River Electric Cooperative for more than 30 years, utility spokesman Ted Austin said.

Armstrong was riding with other members of the Targhee Ridge Runner snowmobile club, Austin said.

The group was returning after a trip out to Ashton when Armstrong crashed, Austin said.

The other riders tended to Armstrong immediately, but he died before medical help could arrive, Swensen said.

A service for Armstrong will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Ashton Stake Center at 516 N. Second St., Austin said.
