Ririe man sentenced for striking woman with rifle
By ALI TADAYON
District Judge Dane Watkins Jr. on Monday sentenced a Ririe man to eight years in prison for striking a woman in the chest with a rifle and holding her against her will.
Shawn Heath, 46, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. An additional second-degree kidnapping charge and a deadly weapon enhancement were dropped pursuant to a plea
agreement. Heath will be eligible to serve the rest of his term on parole after two years.
Bonneville County Sheriff's
deputies arrested Heath around 1:30 p.m. Nov. 30 inside a recreational vehicle parked at 12042 N. 115 East in Bonneville County.
Heath was arguing with Malinda Wheeler, 42, at 1:30 a.m. when he pushed her down onto the couch in the RV and left. Wheeler was his girlfriend at the time. Heath later returned with a .22-caliber rifle and hit Wheeler in the chest with it before holding her against her will for more than two hours, Bonneville County Sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Edwards said.
After hours of yelling at Wheeler, Heath reportedly told her to leave.
According to court records, Heath pleaded guilty to an amended charge of misdemeanor domestic violence in February for a September incident with a different woman. He is scheduled for sentencing on that charge April 30.
