Graphic cellphone pic leads to a big pot bust

Idaho Statesman

BOISE -- An Arkansas man was arrested on a felony count of marijuana trafficking after Boise police reported finding 28 pounds of pot in his motel room near the airport Tuesday night.

The initial report to police had nothing to do with pot -- it was about a cellphone picture of male genitalia.

A woman called police just before 9:45 p.m. Tuesday and said a man she just met at the motel -- later identified as Jeffery B. Ash -- showed her a cellphone picture of his genitals.

When officers got to Ash's motel room to talk to the 54-year-old man about the picture, they found him smoking a joint, according to police reports.

Ash then let them inside the room, according to reports, where officers found two duffel bags containing 25 separate bags of marijuana, with a total weight of 28.5 pounds.

Police charged Ash with trafficking because of the large amount of marijuana found in the room, as well as other undisclosed evidence that the pot was for sale, officials said Wednesday.

Ash, who jail records indicate is from Fayetteville, Ark., also was charged with a misdemeanor count of indecent exposure for the cellphone picture.

Ash was being held in the Ada County Jail on Wednesday.

Marijuana trafficking is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
