Helicopters are being used for the next several months to gather information about elk, bighorn sheep and deer herds in Central Idaho.
Bret Stansberry, a biologist with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, said the helicopters will fly low to allow researchers to get a good look at the animals. Flights are planned near Salmon, Challis Pahsimeroi, the Lemhi Valley and along the Idaho-Montana border.
Deer surveys are expected to be completed in December and February. Elk surveys are planned for January and bighorn sheep will be studied in March, Stansberry said.
The information is used to determine the overall health of big game herds in Idaho, “which plays a critical role in determining future hunting seasons,” he said.
Helicopter pilots keep an eye out for areas where people are recreating and temporarily avoid those areas where they see people, he said.
