By a 17-7 vote, Atomic City residents have booted Dave Sonnenberg off the City Council.
The proposal to recall the councilman needed to pass both by a majority and by more than 13 votes, which is how many votes Sonnenberg won by when he was elected unopposed in 2015. Atomic City is a mail-in precinct, and 35 ballots were sent out.
Sonnenberg and Mayor Chris Polatis had clashed over some issues, including filling a vacant City Council spot. The recall measure cites this and also accuses Sonnenberg of an Open Meeting Law violation and of meeting with Bingham County Planning and Zoning on the city’s behalf without the mayor’s approval.
Sonnenberg responded he was being targeted because he brought to the attention of the state Attorney General’s office that Polatis was trying to fill a Council seat illegally.
