LOGAN, Utah — A Cache Valley juvenile may face murder charges after a 62-year-old homeless veteran he allegedly attacked two weeks ago died in the hospital days later.
After The Herald Journal inquired about the incident, police issued a press release regarding the April 23 incident, stating the attack followed what turned out to be a false allegation of sexual assault.
Police say a 16-year-old contacted her brother at about 3 p.m. and told him she was sexually assaulted on the Cache Valley Transit bus.
Police say the 17-year-old male went in search of the alleged perpetrator, identified as 62-year-old Michael Fife, who got off the bus near Logan High School.
During the assault, police say Fife fell to the sidewalk and suffered head injuries and he was left unconscious on the sidewalk when the teen fled the area.
Witnesses contacted police, and paramedics were called to the scene. Fife was transported to Logan Regional Hospital and later transported to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden. Fife died the morning of April 27, police state.
The girl did make an official police report at about 6 p.m. on the day of the incident, but according to the police, a review of the transit district’s surveillance video shows Fife did not touch the girl.
Police say the incident is still under investigation and criminal charges will not be filed until the Cache County Attorney’s office has reviewed the case.
