After two years in the 5A classification, Idaho Falls is moving back to 4A in 2022.
Based on enrollment, I.F. was among the smallest schools in 5A when it was bumped up two years ago, but athletic director Pat Lloyd said enrollment has dropped to just over 1,200 and the move down to 4A was made official last week.
“Now we can play the schools our size,” Lloyd said.
The classification cycle in Idaho is set every two years and is determined by enrollment numbers, although schools can petition to stay or move to different classifications.
Lloyd said the transition is expected to be smooth because Idaho Falls already plays all the 4A and 5A programs in the area in every sport, so scheduling won’t be a challenge. Rejoining 4A District 6 should also benefit the athletic programs when it comes to qualifying for state berths because Idaho Falls will be competing against similar sized programs.
