The Skyline High School volleyball team went the distance Thursday for its first win over Idaho Falls in six years.
The Grizzlies defeated the Tigers 27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-12 at home to move to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in 4A District 6 play. The District 91 volleyball rivalry win was the first for Skyline since October 9, 2012, when the Grizzlies downed I.F. 25-19, 17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 15-13 on senior night.
Thursday was Skyline’s second win over I.F. in volleyball since 2006.
“The JV team played before us and they went to five games as well and won,” Skyline coach Hillary Congdon said Friday in a phone interview. “The energy they created I think is what our team played off of. It was just digging deep. They worked hard for the last two weeks. This was where their hard work paid off.”
Congdon said several Grizzlies had a big night in the win. Senior setter Megan McAlevy brought the Grizzlies together and kept them going until the end and tallied several aces, assists and blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Sophie Anderson had “at least 10 kills,” junior right side Emma Baczuk and junior middle blocker Aubrey Hazekant had four blocks and junior libero Morgan Wattenbarger led the Grizzlies in digs.
“Watching them win was exciting,” Congdon said. “We had a bunch of aces and kills that kept them going.”
